There's more than bargains filling the building where the Hearts Club's flea market is held every other week.
The old high school on East Poplar is also filled with memories.
Although the space that used to be divided into classrooms is now divided only by wall studs, many of those walking through the building as they shopped Saturday remembered “this was Mrs. Maude Hopkins' home economics room,” or “This was Mrs. Reeves' class.”
The windows of the school building have been replaced by its owner, Kirk Boatright, and the use of the building donated to the club for its fundraising efforts to pay for the town's huge Christmas tree.
The tree is believed to be the tallest in Oklahoma and has been set up the last two years on Centennial Square. However, the Hearts Club is three $5,000 payments away from having the note paid off, said Theda Rowan, who spearheads the group.
With Boatright donating the space for the flea market and getting all the goods donated for the sale, the Hearts Club has raised much of this year's payment through its bi-weekly garage sale, Rowan said. In fact, the event has been so successful that it may be held weekly.
Terry Beutelschies of Fort Gibson headed for the checkout Saturday with her arms loaded with rolls of wallpaper she had found at the flea market.
“I like the good bargains,” she said.
Her mother, Peggy (Gilliam) McClellan, loaded up on bargains. She had a stack of dishes, a roll of wallpaper and other items.
But she also liked being in the old school she attended.
Where she was standing — that was Mrs. Reeves’ class, McClellan remembered.
